He had a great event in NAMPA, Idaho (April 5, 2009)where he finished 6th over all.. He rode 3 out of 4 of his bulls ![]() Update (News) 1-18-09 Kansan braves bull riding's pain BY JEFFREY LUTZ The Wichita Eagle Dusty LaBeth's list of injuries reads like an afternoon at the emergency room. Broken femur. Torn stomach muscles. Broken pelvis. Tears of both groin muscles. Broken ankles. Separated shoulders. Concussions. Broken wrist. And those are just what LaBeth calls "the biggest ones." Injuries are to be expected in LaBeth's line of work -- bull riding. But some of his can be attributed to just plain bad luck. They have caused LaBeth to miss about half of his 10-year career on the Professional Bull Riders circuit. LaBeth, a Louisburg native, will compete in a PBR Enterprise tour event at the Kansas Coliseum this weekend. "Bull riding is a full-time job for me and I go about it pretty serious," LaBeth said. "But sometimes crap happens. How you deal with it sort of defines who you are. I know there's not one ounce of quit in me. I know I'm not ready to be done." LaBeth has pronounced himself fully healthy several times, then another injury comes along and puts him out of action. Now he believes he is finally 100 percent. "I feel better than I have since I very first started," LaBeth said. "Injuries have plagued me my whole career, but now that everything is calcified over and the scar tissue is strong and thick and half my body is titanium, I'm good to go." Early in his career, LaBeth said he would like to make enough money to be able to retire by 30. At 29, retirement isn't forthcoming. LaBeth has won two events on PBR's highest level, the Built Ford Tough series, and earned about $400,000. But LaBeth isn't going to let his career end on a sour note. He has vowed to place high enough in Enterprise events to make it back to the Built Ford Tough series. "I had a little taste of it last year," said LaBeth, who competed in six BFTS events last season. "This year, I'll be there. There's no doubt in my mind. I'm going to go about things with a never-die attitude and good things are going to happen." LaBeth fell in love with bull riding the first time he climbed aboard a steer at age 13. He quit all the other sports he played with support from parents, Rodger and Susie. He said the adrenaline rush is what drew him to bull riding, and the rush stayed with him when he became a professional. When he began battling injuries, he questioned his place in the sport. "There are those thoughts when things aren't going your way," LaBeth said. "But that's sort of where the term 'cowboy up' comes from. You just have to bare down." Though his career hasn't gone quite as planned, LaBeth has rediscovered his passion, renewed his outlook and, most importantly, healed his laundry list of injuries. "I have no regrets," LaBeth said. "I can't change the past and I don't know what's going on in the future. I'm not going to be one of those guys that says, 'If only.. 'That's a sad story in anybody's life. I've done everything I can."
